What is Gastroparesis?

Gastroparesis is a condition that affects the normal contractions of the muscles in your stomach resulting in delayed stomach emptying. It is a disease where the stomach can’t empty itself in a normal fashion.


What Causes Gastroparesis?

The most common cause is diabetes mellitus, where high blood glucose levels damage the nerves controlling the stomach muscles.


What are the symptoms of Gastroparesis?

Many people with Gastroparesis won't have any noticeable signs and symptoms; however, symptoms can include:

  • Heartburn
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Early satiety or feeling full very quickly after eating just a small amount
  • Vomiting undigested food is eaten a few hours earlier
  • Acid reflux
  • Abdominal bloating
  • Abdominal pain
  • Changes in blood sugar levels
  • Lack of appetite
  • Weight loss and
  • Malnutrition


How is Gastroparesis treated?

Treatment options include medication and rarely surgery.
