What is Crohn’s Disease?

Crohn's disease is a type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that causes inflammation of the digestive tract, leading to abdominal pain, diarrhea, fatigue, weight loss, and malnutrition. Crohn's disease can involve any part of the digestive tract from mouth to anus but is most commonly found in the small intestine.


What causes Crohn’s disease?

The exact cause is unknown; however, researchers believed it is caused by a combination of genetics, environmental factors, and an overactive immune system.


What are the symptoms of Crohn’s Disease?

Symptoms may include:

  • Diarrhea
  • Fever
  • Weight loss
  • Nutritional deficiencies
  • Fatigue
  • Abdominal pain and/or cramping
  • Blood in your stools
  • Mouth sores
  • Loss of appetite
  • Pain or drainage near or around the anus as a result of a fistula or tunnel connecting the bowel and skin
  • Inflammation of the skin, eyes, and joints
  • Inflammation of the liver or bile ducts


How is Crohn’s Disease diagnosed?

A combination of colonoscopy, endoscopy, CT enterography, capsule endoscopy, and laboratory tests are often used to make the diagnosis.
