Avoiding acute diarrhea

  • Get vaccinated. Rotavirus is the most common cause of viral diarrhea in children. Have your children vaccinated.

  • If you drink well water, get your water tested with a reputable lab at least once a year to make sure your water is safe for drinking. Contact your township, public health department, or local extension office if you have questions about well water testing.

  • If you have any pets, especially reptiles, take extra precautions to avoid infection. Talk to your vet.

  • Never take antibiotics not prescribed to you. Don’t self-medicate.

  • Limit or avoid NSAIDs.

  • When traveling:

    • Avoid raw fruits and vegetables unless you peel them yourself.

    • Avoid raw or undercooked meat and dairy products.

    • Do not drink raw milk (cow, goat, sheep, etc.), or unpasteurized dairy products

    • Drink bottled water, soda, beer or wine served in its original container only, and check to make sure that the lids are sealed and containers have not been refilled.

    • Avoid tap water and ice cubes.

    • Use bottled water even for brushing your teeth.

    • Keep your mouth closed while you shower. Don’t drink the water.

    • Eat hot, well-cooked foods.

    • Check CDC travel warnings before traveling.
