Signs It’s Time to See Your Gastroenterologist
Some of the signs below are temporary and don’t mean much unless they persist or happen in conjunction with other symptoms. Others require attention quickly, even if they happen alone. You’ll find more information on each symptom below.
Heartburn
Heartburn is common, especially after eating spicy or fried foods, drinking alcohol or carbonated drinks, or similar activities. However, it typically goes away with rest or OTC antacids.
If you have frequent heartburn that doesn’t ease up, it could be due to a gastric or esophageal issue. This is especially true if it comes in addition to trouble breathing, painful swallowing, dizziness, or dark and bloody stools.
Bloating
If you cannot button pants that you could button yesterday, it’s likely due to bloating. This can be a sign of Crohn’s disease, IBS, ulcerative colitis, GERD, or any number of gastric issues.
Diarrhea
Diarrhea is caused by several things, including drinking too much caffeine or eating the wrong food. It typically resolves itself in a few days. If it continues for longer, a visit to your gastroenterologist in Flemington or Hillborough, NJ is in order.
Constipation
Like diarrhea, constipation is caused by several common things, including not exercising or staying hydrated. When it goes on too long, though, it can be a sign of a serious problem. If you consistently wait three days or more between bowel movements, it’s best to seek help.
Gas
Gas is also normal, as most people pass it several times a day. However, if you have excessive gas, it can be due to a stomach issue, such as GERD, celiac disease, IBD, or IBS.
Rectal Bleeding
If your bowel movements are bloody or black, several things could be going on. It might be hemorrhoids, an ulcer, IBD, polyps, and even cancer. Under no circumstances should you experience rectal bleeding. If you do, make an appointment quickly.
Sudden Weight Loss
Gastric issues can cause rapid, unexplained weight loss. If you notice your clothes fitting too loose out of nowhere, schedule an appointment with Dr. Sinha immediately.
Chronic Fatigue
Gastric problems interfere with the body soaking up the nutrients it needs. If you feel chronically lethargic, it might be due to a lack of nutrients.
