BARRX

Endoscopic ablation procedures destroy damaged esophageal cells and further prevent the progression of Barrett’s esophagus.

BARRX is a specific type of procedure used for the treatment of Barrett’s esophagus. It is performed in conjunction with EGD (or upper endoscopy) and does not require any incisions or surgery. The procedure itself uses radiofrequency energy delivered through a catheter to ablate the abnormal tissue of Barrett’s esophagus with a controlled amount of heat. BARRX may help to reduce your risk of developing esophageal cancer. Once the abnormal cells are gone, ideally new healthy cells can grow and replace them.

During the procedure a sizing balloon will be used to measure your esophagus, then the proper sized BARRX device will be used for the actual radiofrequency procedure. A catheter will be fed through the endoscope allowing Dr. Sinha to deliver energy to the damaged Barrett’s tissue only, sparring healthy mucosa.

Dr. Sinha offers BARRX procedures at Hunterdon Medical Center.
